We had a busy summer season! We organized weekly evening garden drop-in programs for families and people in the community, and daytime programs for camps and agencies at Winchester School Garden, Bruce Junior Public School, and Rose Avenue School Garden. We hosted a Francophone pre and post natal mothers’ group at Winchester, ran a teacher workshop for EcoSource on composting, and had community groups come in to pick fresh herbs and produce for their summer cooking programs. In collaboration with Upwards Art we also hosted art and garden-inspired activities for groups of children.
With support from the Youth Employment Services(YES) Green Thumbs Growing Kids was able to hire two St. James Town youth for the months of July and August. Jimmy, who was here last year, and Ervie were a great addition to the GTGK staff. Not only did they help with programming and garden maintenance, but they also helped design new workshops, build a new composter for one of our gardens, and provided a fresh perspective on environmental and food issues. Jimmy and Ervie also facilitated an introductory food security workshop at a social justice retreat for other St. James Town youth!
