Riverdale Farm

Green Thumbs Growing Kids started out in 1999 as an after-school program at Riverdale Farm for local kids who we walked there from four local schools. The Farm provides an unusual and beautiful ravine setting for children’s gardening and nature programs. As a Community Permit program, we started gardening in the former staff garden outside the Pig & Poultry Barn and soon moved to our current site on the Farm, the slope between the Service Road and the neighbouring Necropolis.

Constructing an annual straw-bale retaining wall, we grow a variety of crops to suit the Spring and Fall sessions of the program. Included in the program are vermicomposting and thermophilic (outdoor bin) composting, crafts, Calendula Salve making, arts, garden games and nature hikes.

Registration for the program is conducted through the local schools. There’s a suggested donation of $30 for a six-week session but it is a Pay-What-You-Can program, and nobody is turned away for lack of money. The program is geared to ages 6-10 and takes place one or two days per week (depending on staff & funding) in Spring and in Fall.
